This course improves working teaching assistants' skills who want to progress to Higher Level Teaching Assistants. You'll gain proficiency in the job's requirements, child development, and handling challenges.

Course Description

• Learners are required to be working within a school as a teaching assistants.

The aim of this qualification is to enhance the skills of teaching assistants who are currently working and aspire to progress to a Higher Level of Teaching Assistant status. By undertaking this course, you will acquire knowledge and proficiency pertaining to the responsibilities of a higher-level teaching assistant and the necessary qualifications for the role. You will broaden your knowledge of child development and the variables that can affect it and develop the competencies needed to handle challenging circumstances and promote positive behaviour. Furthermore, you will provide assistance to students who require additional support or have special educational needs (SEN) and devise effective learning programs that cater to both groups and individuals.

This course emphasizes communication with children, teachers, and parents, and will equip you to teach lessons tailored to diverse ability and language levels.

As part of the evidence-gathering process, students may need to engage in one-on-one sessions or small group discussions with their tutor.

On successful achievement of the Focus Awards Level 4 Certificate for Higher Level Teaching Assistants (RQF) learners may wish to progress to becoming a teacher. Qualifications could include the following:

· Level 3 Award in Education and Training

· Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training

· Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training

The college will provide full support to the individual and can accommodate learning needs or differentiation in learning styles. An appointment can be made with an SEN assessor if a learner believes they may have an underlying issue or condition which will negatively impact their ability to complete work to the desired timetable.

Once agreed upon and documented (to ensure compliance with exam board regulations) if required, additional time to complete assessments can be awarded or if other support needs are identified, these too will, wherever possible, be accommodated.

It is important to be able to show that before starting the course, the learner has a suitable pre-existing level of education to make completion and achievement more likely. To be enrolled on a level 4 course, learners need to demonstrate the following academic abilities:

• Learners are required to be working within a school as a teaching assistants.

• Be working at Level 1.8 or above in English and L1.5 in maths. This is especially important for learners for whom English is not their first language. As the learner will be required to submit written assessments. Learners will be assessed using their BKSB Initial Assessment results. For learners identifying with a specific learning condition who assess at below this, a case-by-case decision can be made. However, it is unlikely that students working at a level significantly below this would be able to complete the course in the required timeframe (even with individual adjustments in place) Some learners may be required to also complete additional diagnostic assessments if we feel further evidence of ability is required.

• Have a good all-round understanding of and proficiency in Digital Skills. This is necessary as much of the work is accessed online, assignments will need to be typed and uploaded to ‘One-File’ and meetings may occur over TEAMS or ZOOM.
