Course Description
This two-year Foundation Degree in Working with Children and Young People is validated by Sheffield Hallam University and taught at University Centre Stockport College and is aimed specifically at people who wish to work in a variety of settings with children and young people.
Throughout this degree, you will develop a knowledge and understanding of the theoretical principles which underpin contemporary topics such as child safeguarding and child & adolescent development and parenting.
Such knowledge will provide you with the opportunity to develop holistically as a practitioner and allow you to explore the range of settings and services which benefit from understanding such a wide-ranging yet comprehensive subject.
In order to apply for this qualification, you MUST be in a work placement with a school where you are working at least one day a week.
Degree Level Financial Support
The education fees for this qualification are £8,000 per year (less than the average university degree).
With no upfront fees, a tuition fee to cover the full cost and a maintenance loan of up to £9,978, studying for your dream career is really affordable. What’s more, you don’t need to pay anything back until you’re earning at least £25,000 per year.
Earn a BA (Hons) Degree
Once completed, you will be eligible to apply for a one-year top-up to gain a full BA (Hons) in Childhood Studies at the University Centre, Stockport College, which is awarded by Sheffield Hallam University.
What Can You Do After Completing Your Degree?
Foundation Degree to help secure promotion, or to change career pathway. Previous graduates have progressed to careers in management, SENDCO roles, pastoral work in educational settings, social care and community work, family outreach services and youth justice work.
Many students progress to further professional qualifications to pursue careers in teaching (Primary, Secondary, or Further Education in Colleges) or embark upon a master’s level of study.

Eligibility
- Must have GCSE English Language at grade 4 or above, or grade C or above if awarded under the previous GCSE grading scheme, with aspirations of working in a setting that involves working with children and young people.
- Must be 18-year-old or older on or before the 31st August 2023.
- You MUST be a UK resident.
- You will need a GCSE Grade C in English or an equivalent (Functional Skills) and a Level 3 qualification in a related field (Childcare). However, learners are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
Applicants who are able to demonstrate relevant work/life skills or knowledge will also be considered on an individual basis.
The course is run two days a week (Tuesday & Wednesday). This only runs from September to May, with campus holidays May to September.
You MUST be able to attend the University Centre Stockport College on these days.
