Functional Skills courses serve as a well-regarded alternative to GCSE qualifications, providing an efficient way to develop and enhance essential skills in core areas such as mathematics and English. Tailored to quickly build the foundational competencies necessary for diverse career paths and further education, our Functional Skills Level 2 English course allows you to master important English concepts at a pace that suits you.
This course is self-driven, allowing you to work at a pace that suits you. You will complete an initial assessment, followed by a diagnostic to set up your individual skills plan. You may have a different starting point to others following the diagnostic, which will set your plan to work towards.

Mandatory units will include:
- Reading: This module of the Functional Skills Level 2 English course focuses on reading for comprehension and critical analysis. It includes evaluating potentially biased materials and assessing the reliability of various authors' viewpoints. The module also covers different layout features and their effects on reader interpretation. Your reading skills will be tested through quizzes at the end of each section and a tutor-marked assignment.
- Writing: This component explores effective writing techniques for different formats, such as emails, blogs, newspaper articles, and letters. It includes a focus on grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Throughout the module, quizzes and tutor-marked assignments will assess your writing proficiency.
- Speaking, Listening, and Communication: This module emphasises the development of speaking, listening, and communication skills, essential for both personal and professional settings. You'll practice handling common scenarios and receive guidance on improving your communication abilities.
