Wherever you are in life, either in school or if you’ve completed a degree, or even if you are looking for a second career - now is the perfect time to get started in the construction industry, and here’s why...
1. Construction is in high demand: The construction sector is in the grips of a skills shortage which is limiting construction activity and increasing labour costs at the same time.
With limited construction initiatives and increasing labour costs over the last few years, this skills shortage is set to continue, the reason for this is that construction companies are finding it hard to recruit talent e.g. carpenters, bricklayers, plumbers and electricians - in many cases demand now outweighs supply.
The good news is that for anyone wanting to get a start into construction, this is the best time to kick-start your career with many companies investing in new homes with an estimated 1 million homes to be built by next year and companies investing in training young people.
2. You can start earning money straight away: As an apprentice you can start earning money as soon as you finish school, you’ll be earning a percentage of that of a fully qualified trades-person but depending on what route you take in two or more years you could be earning up to and in excess of £50,000.
3. You can build a career for life: A career in construction can lead to opportunities in management, training, engineering or even starting your business, as well as the skills and knowledge you gather can be transferred between the different trades - making the possibilities endless.
4. You get to build something significant that people depend on: Our ever expanding world we live in means that people are needing houses faster than ever, you could even contribute to buildings that go down in history - two months ago a new skyscraper was approved in the UK - The Tulip, which will be the tallest building in europe and is set for completion in 2023.
5. The construction industry is booming: According to Reuters, “Construction in Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham and Belfast is at a record high - despite uncertainty about Brexit”
With current infrastructure in the pipeline worth £600 billion, it seems that the industry in the UK is not slowing down and from this there are and will be many jobs and careers available for anyone wanting to get involved with projects across the UK.
How can I get started in this industry?
At The AIM Group we believe that job opportunities should be available to anyone, which is why we work with construction companies who are looking to recruit talented individuals as well as offering a clear pathway to construction through apprenticeships we have available right now.
