What is a CPD Course? CPD Explained

CPD stands for continuing professional development and describes the learning that professionals and individuals undertake to develop their skills and abilities. Learners can complete accredited qualifications to upskill or reskill, ensuring their skills are up to date.

What does CPD accredited mean?

Accreditation for CPD courses simply means that the educational authority of the online learning has been verified. This means that the learning activity, or course, has been checked and scrutinised to ensure that it provides value to you as a learner, and conforms to industry standards.

Why is continuing professional development important?

Continuing professional development is important for a multitude of reasons. Not only is it crucial for individuals looking to maintain their skillset in today’s difficult-to-navigate job market, but it’s also vital for businesses to reduce the skills gap within their staff.

Benefits for individuals:

  • Short online accredited courses are the perfect way to fit learning around your busy day-to-day schedule. At The AIM Group, our online qualification hub features over 100 CPD courses, most of which are under an hour long.
  • CPD can help to show your dedication towards a particular job role or profession. By learning new skills and maintaining consistent and high standards within your learning, you’ll show high levels of commitment to your employment.
  • The diversity and flexibility of CPD allows you to learn in a way that suits you. This can have a huge impact on your development and allows you to take a positive impact into your role.

Benefits for businesses:

  • CPD allows businesses to reskill or upskill their staff without taking them out of work for extended periods of time.
  • Businesses are able to identify skill gaps and quickly fill these by enrolling staff on CPD courses. This encourages a healthy learning environment, leading to a more satisfied workforce.
  • By providing staff with continuing professional development, you can attract a higher level of candidate when recruiting for new roles.

What are CPD credits?

CPD activities that you complete will earn you a number of CPD credits. This can be from an online course, seminar, webinar, workshop, or lecture. Credits are simply a tool to see how much continued professional development a learner has completed.

Credits are usually measured by the number of hours spent on an activity. For example, if you complete an online course that takes 2 hours, you will earn 2 CPD credits.

Having credits is a great way to stand out against competitors in the job market when applying for roles. Adding these skills and CPD credits to your CV shows your commitment to learning within the role and provides employers with proof that you have the knowledge to perform to the required standards.

Some industries also require a certain number of credits to be completed each year. Industries such as teaching, construction, nursing, and counselling are now requiring staff to stay up to date with their professional knowledge and skills.
