The Diploma in Teaching (Further Education and Skills) is a nationally recognised qualification awarded by the University of Worcester. It is designed to prepare you for a rewarding teaching career in the diverse and expanding Further Education (FE) sector. Whether you’re passionate about teaching young adults, adult learners, or those in work-based or community education, this diploma provides the tools, confidence, and experience needed to make a real difference.
The course qualifies you to teach learners aged 14 and above in FE colleges, sixth form colleges, independent training providers, adult education centres, and offender learning environments. The programme is structured over two years, combining academic study with practical teaching placements that allow you to apply theory in real-world contexts.
Year 1 includes modules such as Teaching My Subject, Teaching My Students, and Professional Practice (Part 1). In Year 2, you’ll develop your teaching further with Developing My Curriculum, Developing My Practice, and Professional Practice (Part 2).
Delivered through a blend of lectures, seminars, classroom observations, and work-based learning, the course equips you with vital skills in lesson planning, assessment, classroom management, and inclusive teaching. You’ll also reflect critically on your teaching practice, helping you to continuously improve and adapt.
The Diploma in Teaching (DiT) replaces the successful Diploma in Education and Training (DET) and offers similar strong employment outcomes. Many graduates secure full-time roles in FE, with opportunities for career progression into management or specialist education roles. The qualification also provides a direct route into the final year of the Education Studies BA (Hons) degree (for those without an existing degree), or progression to Master’s level study for those who already hold a degree.
