This Level 1 British Sign Language course is designed to give you a practical introduction to BSL, helping you build the confidence to communicate in everyday situations. You will learn key signs, vocabulary and sentence structures while developing your understanding of Deaf culture and effective communication.

Throughout the course, you will cover useful topics including meeting people, numbers, weather, transport, directions, describing people and objects, interests, activities, food and drink, and sharing information. Learning is focused on developing real communication skills that you can use in day-to-day conversations.

You will also develop both your receptive and productive BSL skills, learning how to understand signs and communicate clearly with others. Assessment involves practical recorded conversations and activities, giving you the opportunity to demonstrate your progress and work towards a recognised Level 1 British Sign Language qualification.
