Sharps Awareness e-learning

It's often mistakenly believed that sharps injuries only affect medical and care professionals. However, individuals in other sectors, like waste disposal, may also encounter used sharps.

Course Description

In this online Sharps Awareness E-Learning course, we'll begin by examining statistics related to discarded needles and defining 'sharps', encompassing various types found in 'sharps litter', such as needles, syringes, and blades.

Next, we'll explore the primary and secondary risks associated with sharps, focusing on employer responsibilities and the use of risk assessment to ensure worker safety.

The course will then delve into detailed discussions on infectious diseases like Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV, and Tetanus, along with explaining the Chain of Infection to understand transmission and prevention measures.

Additionally, we'll assess the probability of infection from needlestick injuries and factors influencing it.

To ensure safe handling of discarded sharps, we'll review necessary equipment like litter pickers, forceps, and gloves, emphasizing proper techniques to avoid injuries.
