5. Keep your CV to the point

It can be easy when writing your CV to be tempted to write as much as you can to sell yourself to employers, but by writing too much some recruiters may lose interest if they’ve been looking through CV’s all day. The key is to get their attention and stand out! Keep your CV short and concise, often two pages are more than enough. Keep the information relevant to the position and make sure you aren’t repeating the same points. 



4. Tailor your CV to the employer 

Another mistake people can make when applying for jobs is to ‘quick apply’, when looking for jobs it can be tempting to apply to as many jobs as possible by sending out a generic CV for every application. 


With almost every application it’s worth taking the time to adjust your CV to the employer’s needs, research the companies background, go through the job description-has your CV met every requirement they’re looking for? Many recruiters are far more likely to consider applicants who have gone the extra mile to make their application relevant to the business. In this case, the golden rule really should be quality over quantity. 



3. Stand out in your personal statement

You’ve probably heard this time and time again, but a personal statement is one of the best ways to stand out to an employer! Remember they are likely to have read through 100’s of applications so takes the opportunity to showcase your personality as well as your skills! 

Some of the best questions to answer in your statement are: who you are? What can you offer to the company? And what are your future career goals? Be sure to come across as forward-thinking, ambitious and passionate about the role! 


 

2. Take the time to write a cover letter 

Much like a personal statement, a cover letter is a great way to showcase your personality to employers. It also showcases your work ethic to them; employers appreciate applicants taking the time to look at the application in detail and in some cases will only consider applicants who have taken the time to write a cover letter with their application. Again, research the company, have they got any notable achievements? Look at their website and make sure to include some key information from it to show you’re passionate about working for the company. 



1. Ask someone to read through your application  

While it’s a great practice to proof-read your application (and you still should), getting a friend, family member or mentor to objectively read through your application is a great way to see the reaction it could get from employers. Where possible ask professionals with experience in the industry or job you’re applying for, in most cases they’ll know what the employer is looking for and ways you can stand out from other applicants.
