CAD Technician

Myth busting

As a CAD or computer-aided design technician, you'll use software to create design plans for buildings and machinery. You could work in a wide range of industries from engineering and construction to manufacturing. There are two types of CAD Technicians, 2D designers which do surface modelling and 3D designers who do solid modelling. 2D designers draw a flat representation of product, i.e. a car. A 3D designer will create a 3D display of the structure of the product, i.e. the inside of a building. CAD job roles may also be called: Computer aided industrial design (CAID), Computer aided engineering (CAE), Computer aided styling (CAS), Computer aided manufacturing (CAM).

A CAD Technician at the top of their game can earn as much as £50kp/a

CAD Technician Apprentices typically start off working 37 - 40 hours a week, Monday to Friday based in a design office, at a CAD design workstation or on a PC.

- You may also want to look for work in other industries such as vehicle goods, construction, aerospace, railways, electronics or telecommunications and broadcasting.
- If you are an experienced CAD technician, you could register with the Engineering Council to gain EngTech status, which could help your professional development.

There are many options to progress within a CAD Technician Role.

The good points...

Your options for career progression include promotion to team leader, CAD Manager or Director, Project Manager and Site Manager. With further training, you could become a design engineer and even work from home as a freelancer when you’re more experienced.

Web Developer

Myth busting

As a Web Developer (or Web Designer) you will be the brains behind the implementation of a website based on a clients design, as well as testing and maintaining the system. Web Developers have to think very logically because they have to take a design and translate it into a language a computer understands, i.e. HTML.

There are several types of web developer; front-end, back-end and full-stack. Front-end developers are responsible for the parts of a website that people see and interact with, back-end developers are responsible for the behind the scenes code that controls how a website loads and runs, and full-stack developers do a bit of everything.

Data Entry

Myth busting

Data Entry varies depending on the type of company you are working for because the information you are inputting will be different from company to company. For example, if you work for a sales company you may input data on new clients, if you worked for a research firm it could be market research results. Additionally, the information you enter could be numerical or text based and come from paper-based information or current digital databases that need refining. As you are the ‘data gate-keeper’ you may also be required to help other people find data they are looking for.

A Network Analysts main job is to tailor-make computer systems for large businesses. Unlike other ICT jobs you will be involved in both the technical aspect of the business as well as a people-facing role - you will need to be able to identify problems and translate them into technical terms, then find a suitable business solution. The types of projects you can expect to work on are integrating phone and internet systems together or restructuring accounts like bank accounts to make the business run more efficiently and improve security. Network Analyst are also sometimes called systems analyst and business analysts.

Myth busting

IT Sales and Service Desk Representatives require different traits to other IT roles due to the customer facing nature of their jobs. You will often work for a large company providing CRM, CMS or other IT-related solutions for businesses selling the best fit of the product to clients. You will then be expected to manage their account and handle any complaints, ensuring that the system is the best one available for their business requirements.

An SEO Analyst has one of the most unique jobs on the market. You will need to be able to cover a wide range of skills and no day will look the same in an SEO-based role.
